Retreat

Every September, to kick off the school year, the Carver student body goes on a retreat. Past trips have been held at Young Life Malibu Club in Princess Louisa Inlet, Rock Ridge Canyon, and Loon Lake Lodge Resort. At the start of the year, there is no better way for students and staff alike to get acquainted and begin to form healthy, lasting friendships than by spending time together to experience creation, community, and Christ. Students and staff participate in various team-building events, enjoy wonderful outdoor recreation activities, and form true community, which carries into the classrooms and the halls of Carver. As a community, we also spend time worshipping together. Special guest speakers are invited to challenge and encourage us in the way we live out our faith in Christ.

Wings Program

Carver’s Wings Program is an enrichment program offered by the school in order to meet the academic and social needs of particularly motivated students. The Wings Program provides a challenging course of study for students who display strong aptitude and motivation in a particular area, with the purpose of encouraging them to further develop their God-given talents.

Students cover the core curriculum and explore enrichment topics that vary according to subject and grade level. Critical and creative thinking skills, field studies, topic acceleration, group presentation, independent research, and study in areas of special interest are all integral parts of the program. The course work in the Wings Program often goes beyond what is prescribed provincially, and may include special projects and field trips.

The Wings Program is offered on a course-by-course basis. Students are expected to meet and maintain the academic and behavioural expectations set out by the teacher in their area of study in order to continue enrolment in the Wings Program. Students can apply to the Wings Program in grades 9, 10, and 11 for the few openings available each year.

Advanced Placement

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is an excellent opportunity for academically talented and motivated students to pursue university level courses. Among Canadian universities, UBC, SFU and UVic are in the top ten for having students with AP credit. Advanced Placement benefits students in a number of ways:

  • Students are able to learn at an accelerated pace with this enriching program
  • Students have the opportunity to participate in rigorous courses that challenge them academically
  • Students gain invaluable experience with first year university courses while still in high school
  • Many universities offer course credit towards a Bachelor degree and/or Advanced Placement in the university (which allows students to skip an introductory level course) for students who are successful on the end-of-course AP Exam. (Students are responsible for paying their own examination fee.)

Outdoor Education

Outdoor Challenge Education is a Grade 10 program where students challenge each other in a group context and encounter God in a natural outdoor setting. We explore building positive relationships and team mentality through various outdoor activities, which include rock climbing, kayaking, SCUBA diving, backcountry hiking, and ropes courses.

Individual Education Plans (IEP)

Our Learning Resource Coordinator works on behalf of Carver students to provide a variety of learning support services. These services come in the form of:

  • Preparation and implementation of IEPs for students requiring adaptations or modifications to their academic program.
  • Preparation and implementation of IEPs in the form of enriched curriculum for gifted students
