Engage
Leadership
Leadership 11 and Leadership 12 are courses designed for motivated students who wish to become involved in school events and school culture. In a school like Carver, there are endless opportunities for leadership. Whether you are gifted in music, public speaking, athletics, or organization, you will find that your gifts will translate into leadership opportunities at Carver. These courses enable students to receive credit for taking leadership initiative in ongoing school programs and/or service to the community. The emphasis in this course is on servant leadership; the aim is for students to learn a way of life that is shaped by service.
Internship
At Carver, you will find a unique opportunity for combining your education with your career. We have developed Internship courses that encourage students to do some career exploration in the 'real world' for part of their school week. By being placed with a mentor, students will learn more about their area of interest 'hands-on' as well as learn problem-solving skills, organization, and knowledge that will help them succeed later in life.
Once students reach Grades 11 and 12, they may choose to arrange an off-campus Internship, paid or unpaid, in which they can develop gifts outside the academic realm and simultaneously receive school credit. This could mean developing a passion for music or dance, building up skills as a web designer, or pursuing a company management position. There are so many possibilities.
Our aim in offering this course is to help students become re-oriented and motivated to complete their education by allowing them to explore career options with academic intervention outside the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate increased initiative and to develop self-confidence by getting directly involved in an entrepreneurial, educational project. On the basis of their performance on site, students will be evaluated accordingly at the close of the term.
Portfolio
Carver requires each student to create a Graduate Portfolio, through which students will learn to take an active and reflective role in their own education.
"At Carver, we take these portfolios seriously-perhaps more seriously than other schools. We believe these portfolios hold a lot of value for our students, and so we encourage our students to take them seriously as well. The graduates' presentations are really quite moving, as students present what they have learned about themselves, and who they have become over their four years here." - Paul Tigchelaar, Principal
From the BC Graduate Portfolio Guide:
Portfolio experiences help students by encouraging them to:

Teacher Assistant
For students in Grades 11 and 12, Carver offers a Teacher Assistant (TA) course for credit. In this course, a student becomes a TA and is given various tasks such as working in a class as a tutor, preparing bulletin boards, performing administrative duties, grading quizzes, etc, for which the student will receive credit. The nature of the work depends on the teacher, the subject they teach, and the abilities of the TA. The TA gains valuable administrative experience and is able to work closely with a teacher.
Student Council
Student Council (SC) facilitates leadership and decision-making by all students in the school. It is an important way for Carver to provide meaningful leadership opportunities for students and to promote a voice for students in school decision-making. Elections are an essential part of SC and will educate students in the freedom of democracy within a community.
Goal of Student Council:
- To learn what it means to serve in leadership
- To shape a positive school culture through student -led activities and events
- To improve school life
Peer Mediation
Carver Christian High School knows that the peer mediation program will send an important message to students: our school is a place of shalom, where differences cause growth, not division. Selected students from the student body will be invited to apply to become Peer Mediators each year. Peer Mediators will be able to learn a great deal about the mediation process as they explore what mediation is, understand more about the principles of conflict resolution and peacemaking, improve in their communication skills, and learn about the six-step mediation process. After their training, successful Peer Mediators will be able to assist in mediating conflicts that may occur between students during the school year.
