Carver Distinctives
At Carver we aim to offer a comprehensive education-one that challenges our students to grow beyond the area of academics. To that end, we have pioneered the "Distinctives" Program: a course series unique to Carver. Each year, our students participate in a Distinctives course designed to develop important life skills, critical thinking skills, and wisdom. These courses also offer practical, hands-on experiences throughout a student's high school education. A large portion of the Distinctives courses focus on preparing our students for the Graduate Portfolio requirement.
Grade 9 "Discover and Explore"
Understanding and expressing one's unique identity; exploring individual interests through a long-term research project; learning what it means to live in community through teamwork exercises and a wilderness retreat; practicing community service; studying the life of Apostle Paul, and learning what difference it makes to be committed to Christ when using one's gifts; introduction to the Grad Portfolio.
Grade 10 "Keys to Success"
Developing a Christian perspective on the nature of "success"; learning to make healthy lifestyle choices that are pleasing to God; learning to make wise financial and career choices; participating in a short-term mentorship program; preparing for, and understanding the requirements of the Grad Portfolio.
Grade 11 "Leading and Serving"
Developing a biblical understanding of servant leadership; understanding other worldviews, cultures, and religions; serving through a short-term missions trip; participating in the Recreation Program; continuing to develop the Grad Portfolio.
Grade 12 "Leaving to Discover"
Focusing on the Grad Portfolio; preparing for students' Portfolio Presentation; understanding and articulating the Christian worldview in terms of the workplace and life after high school; studying Christian ethics.
Worship
Once a week the school meets for chapel in the school gym. Chapel is a time of wholehearted worship, with singing, prayer, and a special message from a Youth Pastor, ministry leader, or sometimes one of our own students. Music is mostly student-led with various worship teams taking turns leading each week.
"Chapel at Carver is an amazing experience. I love seeing the spiritual maturity and how God's love just emanates not only through the worship leaders, but also through Carver as a whole. I feel like I can worship God freely and with all my heart. I have been continually blessed by the people involved and will definitely miss the spiritual connection." -Emily, ('08)
